SELT: Presentation-Activity Hub
Presentation
The International Livestock Show in Togo (SELT) serves as a meeting point for local and international professionals in the livestock sector in Togo, organized by Cabinet Midex in collaboration with SPACE (Animal Production Show - European Meeting Point). It aims to showcase and promote the livestock sector in Africa. This edition of the professional livestock show in Togo positions itself as a convergence point for livestock farmers, suppliers of products and services in the industry, as well as researchers and experts in livestock from the West African sub-region and around the world.
This is a professional platform for exchanging experiences and conducting business among industry stakeholders.
Livestock represents 40% of global agricultural production., ensuring the livelihoods and food security of 45 million farmers in developed countries and 1.3 billion in developing countries. Globally, this sector plays a crucial role in the economies of nations, generating both direct employment opportunities (related to livestock itself) and indirect ones (in the processing and distribution of products). In the West African region, livestock as a whole represents a strategic lever to ensure food security, improve nutrition, and reduce poverty.
It occupies a central place in the economies of countries in this area, sometimes contributing up to 44% of the agricultural GDP. With over 60 million cattle, 160 million small ruminants, and 400 million poultry, the Sahel and West Africa stand out as one of the premier livestock regions in the world. In numerical terms compared to the entire Sub-Saharan Africa, this region represents 25% of the cattle population, 33% of the sheep population, and 40% of the goat population. However, this considerable potential in animal production remains underutilized in the sub-region.
More than a necessity, current and future food and economic challenges recommend that special attention be given to the optimal valorization of the livestock potential in the West African sub-region (OECD/ECOWAS report).
It is in this context that the public-private partnership between Cabinet MIDEX, SPACE, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Rural Development is established.
